Training price is only part of the picture. Here's every cost to budget for, so there are no surprises.
1. Training and assessment
This is the biggest cost and varies by licence class and gearbox. HC and MC cost more than MR and HR because the vehicles are bigger and training takes longer. Ask exactly what's included: truck hire, the final assessment, and any extra lessons.
2. Knowledge test fee
Service NSW charges a fee each time you sit the heavy vehicle knowledge test. Fail it and you pay again, which is why proper study saves money.
3. Licence fee
When you upgrade your licence class at Service NSW, there's a licence fee. Check the current amount on the official fees page.
4. The costs people forget
- Time off work for training days and Service NSW visits.
- Getting there: travel to your training yard.
- Extra lessons if you need more practice before your final test.
- Resits of the knowledge test or final assessment.
Ways to keep costs down
- Study hard so you pass the knowledge test first time.
- Skip unnecessary steps, like going straight from HR to MC.
- Choose one-on-one training so no lesson time is wasted waiting.
- Ask about payment plans.
