Getting started
How long does it take to get a truck licence?
Most courses take 1–2 days of training once you've passed the heavy vehicle knowledge test. The full journey is 5 steps: knowledge test, logbook, training, final test, then licence.
Which licence should I get?
It depends on the licence you hold now, how long you've held it, and the work you want. Try the 3-question quiz on our homepage, or call Tommy and he'll tell you in a minute.
Do I need my own truck?
No. You train in Tommy's truck and use it for your final test too.
Where do I train?
At our yard in Wetherill Park. Students come from Bankstown, Fairfield, Liverpool, Blacktown, Parramatta and Penrith.
I've never driven anything bigger than a car. Can I still do this?
Yes. Most students start exactly there. Lessons are one-on-one, so Tommy goes at your pace, from the first pre-operational check onwards.
Eligibility
What do I need before I can get an MR licence?
A car licence held for at least 1 year (P plates count, L plates don't), plus a pass in the rigid heavy vehicle knowledge test.
Can I go straight to HR and skip MR?
Yes, if you've held your car licence for at least 2 years. HR covers everything MR does.
What do I need for HC?
An MR or HR licence held for at least 1 year, plus a pass in the combination heavy vehicle knowledge test.
What do I need for MC?
An HR or HC licence held for at least 1 year, plus a pass in the combination knowledge test.
Can I go from HR straight to MC?
Yes. If you've held HR for at least 1 year you can skip HC and go directly to MC. See our HR to MC upgrade.
I have an overseas or interstate licence. Can I train with you?
Call Tommy first. The rules depend on your licence and how long you've held it, and he'll tell you what applies to you.
Are these rules official?
They're set by Transport for NSW and can change. Always check the official NSW page before booking your test.
Knowledge test
Which knowledge test do I sit?
The rigid test for MR or HR licences, or the combination test for HC or MC licences. You only sit one.
How many questions are there?
45 questions about road rules and road safety for heavy vehicles.
How do I study for it?
Read the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook, then use the official question bank and free practice test until you pass 10 times in a row. Every link is on our knowledge test page.
Where can I practise for free?
Use the free official NSW practice test and question banks, linked on our knowledge test page.
Can I do the test in my language?
Yes. It's available in Arabic, Chinese, Croatian, Greek, Korean, Serbian, Spanish, Turkish and Vietnamese, and Service NSW can arrange a free interpreter on 13 77 88.
What do I bring to the knowledge test?
A completed Licence Application form, your proof of identity documents, and glasses or contacts if you wear them.
What if I fail the knowledge test?
You can sit it again, sometimes on the same day if there's availability. You pay the test fee each time, so practise until you're confident first.
Logbook
What is the logbook?
After you pass the knowledge test you get a heavy vehicle logbook. Tommy records and signs off your skills in it during training. It comes with the official assessment guide, which lists every skill you'll be checked on.
Do I need to bring it to lessons?
Yes, bring it to every lesson, and keep it safe. You'll need it for your final test.
Training
What happens in a training day?
Pre-operational checks, yard skills like gears, turning and reversing, then real road driving. Tommy signs off each skill in your logbook as you master it.
Are lessons one-on-one?
Yes. Every lesson is just you and Tommy, never a group.
Auto or manual?
You can train in an auto, synchro or Road Ranger gearbox. An auto licence limits you to auto trucks, while manual or Road Ranger opens more jobs. Tommy will help you choose.
What should I wear and bring?
Closed-toe shoes, your driver licence, your logbook, glasses or contacts if you need them to drive, and water and lunch.
What if I need more practice?
You get more training. Tommy won't send you to your final test until you're ready.
Final test
Who does my final test?
Another assessor from our school, not Tommy. NSW rules say the instructor who trains you can't also do your final test, so Tommy trains you and signs off your logbook, and another assessor from the same school does your final test. It keeps the test fair.
What is the FCA?
The Final Competency Assessment is your final driving test, done by another assessor from our school. It includes at least 45 minutes of on-road driving in a loaded truck, plus reversing, on an approved route. It's video recorded to keep it fair.
What if I don't pass the final test?
Tommy will go over what needs work with you, give you more training, and get you ready to try again.
Cost and booking
How much does it cost?
It depends on the licence and gearbox. Call Tommy for today's price. If you find it cheaper somewhere else, tell him.
Can I pay it off?
Yes, payment plans are available. Ask when you book.
How do I book?
Use our online booking, call 0402 737 745, text Tommy, or email him. He confirms your day and time, usually the same day.
What days and times do you train?
Call or text Tommy and he'll find a day that suits you.
Are there other fees besides training?
Yes. Service NSW charges its own fees for the knowledge test and your new licence. See the official fees page.
After your licence
How do I get my new licence?
After you pass your final test, take your paperwork to a Service NSW centre and upgrade your licence.
What jobs can I get?
MR opens delivery, courier and tipper work. HR adds garbage trucks, concrete agitators and heavy freight. HC and MC open semi-trailers, B-doubles and interstate linehaul. See careers and pay.
How much do truck drivers earn?
Typical full-time ranges are around $60K–$90K for MR, $90K–$110K for HR, $110K–$140K for HC and $120K–$180K for MC. Pay depends on the employer, hours and experience.
Can I come back for my next upgrade?
Yes. Many students do MR or HR first, then come back for HC or MC once they're eligible.
