You can be a brilliant driver and still fail the knowledge test. It isn't about driving skill. It's about knowing specific rules and numbers. The good news: it's very passable with the right method.
Know which test you're sitting
There are two heavy vehicle knowledge tests in NSW. The rigid test is for LR, MR and HR. The combination test is for HC and MC. Study for the right one, because the question banks are different.
Use the official sources only
Transport for NSW says everything you need is in three documents: the Heavy Vehicle Driver Handbook, the Road User Handbook and the Load Restraint Guide. Random apps sometimes use other states' rules, and that can cost you marks.
Our 4-step study method
- Read the handbook once, start to finish. Don't memorise yet. Just get the big picture.
- Work through the question bank. The official rigid and combination question banks contain the questions that can appear.
- Mark the ones you get wrong and go back to the handbook for those topics.
- Do the free practice test until you pass 10 times in a row. Once is luck. Ten times is knowledge.
Topics that catch people out
Numbers. Vehicle dimension limits, following distances between long vehicles, when you need warning triangles. These are pure memory, so make flashcards for them.
