After more than 25 years as a truck instructor and over 3,000 drivers trained, patterns start to show. Here's what the best drivers have in common.
They're not the most confident on day one
The students who turn out best are often the nervous ones at the start. Nerves mean you respect the vehicle. That respect turns into careful, consistent habits.
They ask questions
Every question asked in training is a mistake avoided on the road. Great drivers stay curious for their whole careers.
They do the boring things every time
Pre-operational checks. Mirror checks. Re-checking the load. Nobody claps for these, but they're what keep you and everyone else safe.
They don't rush
Rushing causes nearly every problem in a truck: clipped kerbs, missed gears, bad reverses. The best drivers move with calm, steady purpose.
They plan ahead
A truck can't stop or change direction quickly. Great drivers read the road far ahead: lights changing, traffic bunching, a car about to pull out.
They keep improving
Some of our students come back years later for their next licence. Luto held his HR for a decade before upgrading to HC, and now he wants to become an instructor. That mindset is what makes a career.
