If you've held your HR for a while and you're eyeing B-double money, there's a shortcut most people don't know about.
The rule
To get an MC licence in NSW, you need to have held an HR or HC licence for at least one year. That "or" is the key word. You don't have to do HC first.
Why skip HC?
- Save time: one upgrade instead of two.
- Save money: one course, one assessment, one licence fee.
- Go straight to the top: MC covers every HC vehicle anyway, so you lose nothing.
Is it harder?
MC training covers a lot: coupling multiple trailers, managing a much longer vehicle, and reading the road further ahead. But you're not starting from scratch. A year of HR driving has already taught you mirrors, gears and road craft. The training builds on that.
The knowledge test
You'll need to pass the combination heavy vehicle knowledge test, not the rigid one you did for HR. Grab the combination question bank and get studying.
