Bus driving is a popular, stable career, and your heavy vehicle licence is the first step. But there's an extra piece people often miss.
Which licence covers which bus?
- LR: vehicles up to 8 tonnes that carry more than 12 adults including the driver, such as minibuses.
- MR: two-axle rigid vehicles over 8 tonnes, which covers many standard buses.
- HR: three or more axles over 8 tonnes, including articulated "bendy" buses.
The extra requirement: a Bus Driver Authority
The NSW Government is clear on this: no matter what licence class you hold, to drive passengers for a fare or any other payment you must also hold a Bus Driver Authority. That involves extra requirements beyond your licence, such as a training course and checks.
What bus companies look for
Requirements differ by employer, so check their ads. Some major operators list a minimum MR licence plus the Driver Authority, and some will help you with parts of the process.
