Once you're in a heavy vehicle, some of the rules change. Here are seven you'll need to know cold, for your knowledge test and for real life.
1. Your top speed is 100 km/h
In NSW, the maximum speed limit for a vehicle over 4.5 tonnes GVM is 100 km/h, even on a 110 zone. Many heavy trucks are also fitted with speed limiters by law.
2. Truck speed limit signs apply to you
On sharp bends, steep descents and winding roads, there may be special lower speed limits for trucks and buses. You must not exceed them.
3. "Trucks and buses must use low gear"
On steep descents, you must select a gear low enough to control your speed without relying on your brakes. Riding the brakes down a long hill can cause them to overheat and fade.
4. Truck lanes are compulsory
Where a "trucks must use left lane" or truck lane sign applies, you must use it.
5. Keep your distance from other long vehicles
If you're driving a vehicle 7.5 metres or longer behind another long vehicle, the road rules require a gap of at least 60 metres, or 200 metres for road trains. This doesn't apply on multi-lane roads or in built-up areas, but a bigger gap is always smarter.
6. Carry warning triangles over 12 tonnes
Vehicles over 12 tonnes GVM must carry three portable warning triangles, to set out if you break down or lose part of your load in certain conditions.
7. "Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle"
Long vehicles displaying this sign may use more than one lane to turn. When you're the one driving, you'll need this space, so position carefully and check mirrors constantly.
